Akshay Kumar (b. 1998) is an American artist based in Great Falls, VA, working primarily in oil and watercolor. A deepening practice of meditation and investigation into the nature of self led him to a simple but profound realization that life must be rooted in truth, love, and beauty. This conviction has become the foundation of his practice. He returns constantly to light and formlessness, the most subtle registers of visual perception, where beauty appears as a facet of the vastness from which it arises.
Statement
I have come to see beauty not as a property of things, but a timeless presence — something an object, an experience, or a moment of love can open onto, without containing it. I hope to reveal this presence through large scale works of oil and watercolor, creating gradient-based compositions that hover between representation and abstraction, treating color as atmosphere rather than object.
In oil, I work towards formlessness. Largely muted colors are laid down and blended wet into wet until every brush mark vanishes, resolving into a perfectly smooth, continuous layer, closer to atmosphere than object. The painting presents as an unbroken whole, where colors drift and radiate softly across the canvas, letting quiet passages breathe alongside fuller ones — color fields that may barely register above the white of the ground, or intensify into something more immersive.
In watercolor, I trade control for curiosity. Over the course of days, layers of highly saturated gradient washes are laid down, combining in unpredictable ways — bleeding, shifting, pooling. It is a searching process, where each work becomes a negotiation between what I set out to do and what the material insisted on instead. Occasionally, gestural marks interrupt and anchor the color field. Elsewhere, panels pair or grid together, letting hue read differently through context.
In both bodies of work, color acts as a tether. It is present enough to hold attention, but always pointing to something beyond it.
